Gaffigan started her acting career in regional theater before moving to New York and performing in sketch comedy groups and small theater companies where playwrights produced original plays. Through the presentation of complete Shakespearean plays, Gaffigan created the non-profit theater company, Shakespeare, on the Playground, which is committed to teaching literacy and development to urban youth. With her friend and future husband Jim Gaffigan, she started writing and producing comedy. Since then, Gaffigan has contributed to the writing and production of all five of Jim’s comedy specials, as well as acting as the producer of the first.
Gaffigan and her husband started working on a pilot called The Jim Gaffigan Show in 2013. She directed the Season 2 finale episode. The Gaffigans made an appearance on NPR’s Ask Me Another in July 2015. In March 2016, she won a Christopher Award for “My Friend the Priest,” a Season 1 episode of The Jim Gaffigan Show. The Gaffigans gave the commencement address at the Catholic University of America in May 2016. In June 2018, the Gaffigans released A Short Film by @JeannieGaffigan, a short film written and directed by Gaffigan and starring Jim, Marre, Jack, Katie, Michael, and Patrick Gaffigan.
