We all love some good make-up contouring but what would you do if I told you that this same idea could be applied to your hair? None other than hair strobing is the latest and greatest trend in new ways to highlight hair. You may have heard of strobing for your face, but for an incredible new look, this innovative technique can now be applied to your luscious locks.
Origins
The look was created together with colorist Nalan Derby by a team at the Andrew Jose Salon in London. We were the first to pay real attention to customizing face-framing highlights in the same way that we see the focus on make-up. To strob the hair of a client Derby makes a custom map of the face of each client and uses it as a guide to show the areas most appropriate for creating a brightening glow based on your current appearance. The strobing trend has spread everywhere since its inception like wildfire heating up the looks of celebrities including early adapter Gigi Hadid. And who doesn’t want Gigi’s beautiful hair’s effortless depth? Look at this post on Instagram at 35am PDT on July 2016 Dozens of models including Jourdan Dunn and Victoria’s Secret Angel Romee Strijd took the effortless look of strobing to the next level. Also called baby lights, face framing highlights imitate natural light that normally lightens your hair and brightens your face. The strobing effect comes in as the colorist’s strategically placed these highlights are combined with darker, more chunky highlights. Personalization The coolest thing about strobing hair is its ability to be personalized ultimately; your colorist works with your specific face shape to highlight parts of your hair that will help to lighten the area around your eyes and cheekbones helping to draw the eyes of others to give you a show stopping hair head. The highlighting of cheekbones works wonders as hair color for a round face while strobing is practically made for everyone. Maybe that’s why Gigi’s sweet look works so well! But to pull off hair strobing, you definitely don’t have to have celebrity status. In fact, that’s the beauty of this trendy style that anyone can wear because it’s meant to bring out the best you can do, and there can be no two strobing styles. Since hair strobing is so customizable, it is easy to adjust the look to match the shape of your face and highlight your best features. Round Your face is as long as it’s broad and smoother and rounded is your chin and jawline. For a round head, by applying highlights to the bottom of your hair, you’ll want to build a longer slim look. A stylist should apply lowlights to your head’s crown and draw your cheekbones while removing your hairline’s highlights. Emma Stone follows the rules with highlights focused near the bottom of her hair and no highlights on her bangs that would otherwise draw attention to the center of her face. Gals with oval-shaped heads are lucky enough to have more balance in their faces and can try some bold strobing choices. Essentially, pulling off a multitude of looks is the easiest face shape! Highlights under your hair can illuminate the perfect face, and strobing along the cheekbones can make your best feature come out. Look at this post on Instagram at 55am PDT Heart on Mar 2017 Your face is heart-shaped if your forehead is the widest point on your face and your chin tapers down to a point. Balance narrower cheeks with highlights centered around your head’s crown. To give the illusion of a rounder head, the lightest of your strobed lights should be around your chin. This look was achieved by Matrix Australia in the photo below. Square If your front cheekbones and jawline are about the same width and you have a strong jawline, your face is square-shaped. Sideswept bangs will work wonders for a square-shaped face to soften. In terms of strobing location, the front of your hair sticks out evenly. Temples and cheekbones highlights also help soften your look. Even highlights that soften her jawline around Ciara’s face and give her a glow. (Note the baby bump certainly helps) Look at this post on Instagram on Mar 2017 at 00am PDT How it’s done The colorist can work with two shades of darker or lighter color than the natural hair color. This way your skin tone can be complimented by the colors. To achieve a natural look, this element is very critical. The entire idea behind strobing is effortlessness perfected. Although I strongly recommend using a hairstrobing professional, the look can be done at home. You need to have a good eye for color and light (preferably an artistic eye). Start with hair contouring by mixing with your natural tone in your current color. See this post on Instagram at 30pm PDT on March 2017 Next look in the mirror and decide where the natural light will hit your hair and where your cheekbones will start. This will help you apply the contour to your hair (one or two shades lighter) to make your eyes pop. To keep the section look natural off parts of your hair and add highlights to create shade and light across your natural hair color. Maintenance In the midst of all the intense contouring tutorials and body shaping that dominates our make-up and styling trends, it’s a little ironic that a low-maintenance look took the world by storm. Strobing works though, because on everyone it looks beautiful. What’s important is to make sure this brilliant style of coloring lasts. As with all the highlighted skin, the care is necessary when it comes to hair strobing. Doing so will make the paint last longer so you don’t have to go to the salon for as many trips. Look for shampoos and conditioners to help keep color like the Hydrate line from Pureology. It is sulfate-free and has a patented Anti-Fade complex to help keep the color of your salon lasting longer. Pureology also offers redheads and blond brunettes (goodbye brassy tones) treatments. Look at this post on Instagram at 02am PST on February 2017 There’s really no excuse why you shouldn’t try strobing your hair the next time you color it. Most of us at the salon are already getting highlights, so why not make full use of them? It’s always a good idea to look and feel your best.
