Luis Escobar – Biography of Luis Escobar

Luis Escobar was born on December 12, 1908 in Madrid. He was an actor, author and theater director, and held the title of Marqués de las Marismas.

He graduated in Law. Thanks to his noble title he was related to the upper classes of Madrid, for which he was appointed, in 1938, Head of the Theater Section, which depended on the Ministry of the Interior of the first government formed by Franco.

However, it is noteworthy that Luis, once the war ended, became part of the Spanish Theater in Madrid, where it can be said that, despite having been somewhat murky beginnings, his work was very worthy. Later he directed the company of the María Guerrero Theater and, later, the Spanish Theater. Later he created his own theater, the Eslava.

From his work as a theater director we can highlight works such as “The case of the murdered woman“,”Any woman“,”I wait for you at the Eslava“Or”The savages in Puente San Gil“, among others.

In 1974 he made his debut on the small screen, appearing in a couple of chapters of the series “The rogue”. Later he participated in other series and productions, such as “Don Baldomero and his people“,”Gold rings“,”Goya“Or”Central Brigade”.

In 1977 he made his film debut with Luis García Berlanga, who offered him a role in his feature film “The national shotgun”. The film was a scathing satire on the hunts organized by the aristocracy during the Franco regime, Escobar gave life in it to the Marqués de Leguineche, the owner of the farm where the hunts are made. His performance was a great success, which meant not only two more sequels for the feature film, but also the typecasting of the actor in aristocratic roles that we could almost describe as self-parody.

Among his filmography we can highlight titles such as the two sequels to the aforementioned “La Escopeta Nacional”, “National Heritage” Y “National III“, And others like”La Sabina“,”What are the socialists coming!“,”Beehive”, “The great comedy“,”Spanish soldier“,”Al-Andalus (The way of the sun)“Or”Don Juan, my dear ghost”.

Luis Escobar can be said to have died performing, since he left us on February 16, 1991, during the filming of the film in which he was intervening, “Offside”By Fernando Fernán Gómez.
