Helmut Lang – Biography of Helmut Lang

Helmut Lang was born in Austria in 1956. Lang had started his professional career in the financial field, but had a special interest in the world of fashion.

He was always looking for the perfect clothes for him, the perfect jacket, perfect pants, but he could not find any firm that satisfied him, so he decided to create his own firm in order to design those garments that he himself needed to wear.

At the age of 21, he established his own design studio in Vienna. Nine years later he made his debut in Paris when the government of his country invited him to parade in the capital of fashion, during an Austrian national exhibition held at the Pompidou museum.

Lang has managed to establish himself as one of the most prominent designers in the world of fashion thanks to his fervor for minimalism.

The world of fashion has made him the king of minimalism thanks to his capacity for synthesis and vision of the basic elements of design. Synthesizing shapes, sobriety and elegance are qualities of their garments.

Lang believes that his key is not to follow any kind of pre-established style, he simply approaches current events, urban needs but without thinking that things have to go out of style every six months.

For Lang the goal is not to be unmarked or mysterious, the key lies in being able to understand and respect people who follow established parameters and rules, but trusting that when following these rules no longer makes sense, one must be able to break and seek new directions.

In the field of technology, Lang has been a designer related to advances in clothing, combining and developing new synthetic fabrics, being one of the first to mix natural fibers with synthetic fibers.

It is often said about this designer that he is a futurist, but his most accurate description is that of a modern man who is aware of rapid technological advances.

His style can be defined as modern, current, simple, precise, minimalist, intelligent and existentialist.

He was the creator of many of the fashions that appeared in the 90s and are still prevalent, such as streetch t-shirts.

Urban clothing with a clear prominence of neutral colors such as black, khaki, gray and white with some color details, either orange or fuchsia. Adapted lines, frequently adjusted to the body, are the main characteristics of his designs.

His influence within international fashion has been very intense, as he has been the promoter of the idea of changing the European fashion calendars, without imagining that all brands would follow his initiative.

In 1997 Lang left his Vienna residence to settle in New York where he began a collaboration with the firm Prada and also dedicated himself to generating a great expansion of his firm internationally, which has concluded with the sale of most of its signs to the group that owns Prada.

In 2000, Lang was accepted into the elite Council of American Designers, which was originally created exclusively for North American designers.

Today, Lang continues to captivate the public and the press who seek modernity in design, with a lot of style and without fanfare, a classic style with a clear subversive and creative connotation.

During the last year there have been divergences and differences between Lang and Prada (owner of Lang’s firm) that have concluded with Lang’s abandonment of his own firm, but it seems that after the reaction of the media, Lang is willing buy back the signature that bears his name. At the moment there were no news about this topic.
