Children hang out on the balcony in “This Is America” with their faces covered and their cell phones capturing everything they see under them. Gambino’s posture in the first minute of the video is reminiscent of a caricature of Jim Crow. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this form of anti-black imagery was widespread and portrayed lazy self-hating Black people who were abusive and animalistic in frustration.
