WhatsApp Quote Vulnerability Feature is a serious threat! Helps Fake NewsByNitish Singh-August 9, 2018.130 With over a billion people using WhatsApp’s Facebook-owned messaging service, the app seems to have basic bugs that can be abused by anyone at risk for all users. The vulnerabilities, if left unpatched for too long, will lead to a rise in misinformation on the platform. Three different methods of intercepting messages have been associated with a spike in false newscompany which can lead to an increase in misinformation on the web. All three methods employ social engineering techniques that allow users to change reaction texts. Check Point’s research team managed to identify WhatsApp’s encryption method, using three methods of manipulation to intercept conversations. The security researchers were able to submit and exploit the encryption keys to check in on WhatsApp’s security practices by transferring the protobuf2 encryption data to a different platform. The first method of deception involves spoofing answers in conversations to spoof other or non-existent members of the group. The second method involves manipulating the chat messages by sending answers to yourself on behalf of someone else. The last form of exploitation involves sending messages only to select users within a network. The messages can be intercepted before they are actually sent to the WhatsApp servers and some data can be modified to pick which group members get access to what you are sending them to. The three vulnerabilities were explained including a step-by-step procedure that describes how attacks on WhatsApp can occur. Check Point also clarified the application’s encryption and decryption mechanism, and how it can be manipulated to the liking of a user.
