The malware operates on a much larger pool of devices than suggested by the news, and can degrade the protocols and steal data from internet browsing. Manufacturers of the affected routers have been asked to fix the vulnerability as soon as possible with firmware updates. The Vpnfilter malware which has been said to jeopardize over 500,000 routers is stated to be more dangerous than indicated by initial reports. The number of devices that the malware can target is much higher, and a variety of widely used routers are included in the list of devices. In the malware a new module has been discovered that can degrade the security of Háps on infected routers. It may also have payloads that can be used to hack systems and steal private data including passwords and information on web browsing. Figure 2 Picture Courtesy of Cisco Vpnfilter malware operates by manipulating internet traffic and full access to incoming and outgoing data is available to attackers. With the Fbi Weeks ago shutting down the command and control unit the malware is already out in the open and attackers can use it to target users around the globe. Cisco’s security team has released a detailed report on the botnet saying the number of infected devices is much higher than originally assumed. Most of the equipment affected are home and small bureau routers Nas storage devices and network switches. Hackers can access the routing devices and control network data without leaving any evidence of an assault on them. The security team has explained that the team’s initial analysis contributed to the conclusion that the botnet was intended for routing attacks. The botnet will, however, not only affect incoming and outgoing data, but also alter bank account balances after stealing your money to avoid raising suspicion or even stealing Pgp key. All of this is made possible by downgrading a much less stable and unencrypted Háps protocol to Háp. If the attack on an infected computer is in stage 1 process it will be resolved easily by resetting the router with a hardware button. Nevertheless, if the vulnerability is in stage 2 or 3 users need to contact their supplier of hardware for assistance.
