John Madden was born in Austin Minnesota on 10 April 1936 to Mary Margaret (nee Flaherty) and Earl Russell Madden. Nevertheless, a small town south of San Francisco California was born at Daly City. His father, while his mother was a homemaker, worked as an auto-mechanic. Madden attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s Catholic Parochial School, and then Jefferson High School where he was a standout player in football. He graduated in 1954 and went on to attend San Mateo College where he spent a year at the University of Oregon before receiving a football scholarship. Nevertheless, Madden’s Oregon football career was cut short by a knee injury that required him to undergo surgery. He eventually lost his scholarship, and in 1955 moved to San Mateo.
Career
Madden was in San Diego for three years before moving the ladder up again. He joined NFL’s Oakland Raiders this time as a linebackers assistant. He played an instrumental role in the team that won Super Bowl II that season so when head coach John Rauch left his position in 1969 the Raiders named him to that position, and he became the best coach in franchise history. John claimed the 1977 Super Bowl XI, before retiring to pursue a media career in 1978. This has seen him win the 1984 National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association of the Year Award, and the 2002 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award among many others, 16 Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Event Analyst.
Marital Life
John Madden married his wife Virginia Fields on 26th December 1959. It was said that Madden met her at a Pismo Beach bar while he was a student at Cal Poly. Fields at the time was a school teacher working on her own Master’s degree.
