Both studios and networks have doubled on science fi making it come alive in its many different ways. It’s contributed to a revival for Star Trek and Star Wars likes, while taking us along a host of brand new stories. Recently television has seen the genre expand to new heights. You would be hard pressed to find a major network that at least hasn’t tested the waters in the sci-fi domain. It makes sense too; for some of the most popular franchises, the genre has become a breeding ground, both modern and old. Of all the different shows on television today, although there is a handful that stands as truly great above the rest. And this is what anyone who calls himself a science fiction aficionado will be watching right now without further ado.

If you’re looking for a more Earth-bound plot, BBC America’s Orphan Black is a good way to go. The series takes the group of innocent clones born of that experiment deep into a top secret human cloning project and the sinister organization is chasing them away. And even if it wasn’t an incredibly performed plot, Orphan Black would only be worth your time thanks to Tatiana Maslany’s success, who has the challenge of playing a variety of different clones each with their own distinct look and personality. 3.

Everyone missing Geek goes as far as describing it as “Firefly meets Dark Angel” and we’ve been enjoying the first season we’ve had a hard time disagreeing with.

If we didn’t include the longest running sci-fi series in the genre’s history, we’d be remiss. Doctor Who gained iconic status in his 50 plus years on the air running through a series of talented actors in the Doctor’s lead role. It definitely comes a long way from its cheesier early days working on a much larger budget and bringing in a host of famous British actors each season as guests. And while recent seasons have often missed the mark, in the world of truly great science fiction, there is no denying Doctor Who’s place.

7. Dark Matter SyFy

It is no accident that three different times the SyFy network checks into our list. We have slowly but surely brought together over the past couple of years a series of well-made, carefully built science fiction shows losing their Sharknado image in favor of a more mature lineup. That takes a series brought to us from Stargate’s creative team into Dark Matter. The basic premise is clear enough: Six people wake up without their memory on a spaceship and have to work together to find out what happened to them and who they really are. And while things begin a bit slow the show rewards you with a stellar run of episodes spanning two full seasons for your patience. 8. Stranger Things Netflix

Stranger Things took us all by surprise as a full-blown sci-fi sensation to arrive on stage in 2016. The groundbreaking series of the Duffer Brothers captured all the nostalgia of a classic film from Spielberg while still giving us a fresh look at the genre. Buoyed by outstanding performances from his young cast, it’s safe to say that Stranger Things was definitely one of the best television shows of the year and we can’t wait to see what it brings to the table for its second season.
