ssa Rae) daughter of Christina Eames (Chante Adams), a popular photographer. When Christina dies Mae has a mixture of feelings, mainly because she and her mother had no very romantic relationship and she had a lot of unanswered questions about her. When Mae discovers letters and a snapshot in a safe deposit box, she goes on a journey where she learns about the life and identity of her mother. This journey goes hand in hand with a relationship she and a journalist named Michael Block (Lakeith Stanfield) start off on. The film also stars Y’Lan Noel Courtney B. When a Black director will direct Black actors in a Black movie, you can always tell. Meghie does a great job helming this movie and credit also goes to Mark Schwartzbard for the film’s lush look and the beautiful way it portrays the cast’s skin on screen. Robert Glasper’s enthralling jazzy music also contributes to the stunning aesthetics of the film. The script of Meghie helps her actors to play certain roles without coming off as inauthentic. It’s not overbearing and in places where it needs to be clearer. Stellar performances around

Stanfield’s success here show he’s not only one of Hollywood’s most talented actors working, but he’s handing down one of the most versatile entertainers at ease. He brings a certain warmth to the position which nobody else could have conveyed. Rae is also good here and it’s fun to see how she’s doing drama, as opposed to the comedy material she’s known for. Elsewhere, Chante Adams continues to demonstrate that she is one of the industry’s most underestimated slept-on talents. Most notable for her appearance in Netflix’s Roxanne Roxanne opposite Mahershala Ali and Nia Long, she is undeniably crucial to the more dramatic moments of the film and brings her A-game.

Some of Kelvin Harrison Jr’s more positive players in the film. Jasmine Cephas Jones Lil Rel Howery and Teyonah Parris are also all excellent. As we saw in Waves last year, Harrison Jr. has a talent for playing dark nuanced teenagers. He’s received critical acclaim for that material but seeing him in a comedic role here and crushing it shows he can do just about anything as well. While in their solo scenes Stanfield and Rae are decent they are better when interacting with the other cast members. The scenes of Harrison Jr. and Stanfield portraying a mentor-mental relationship and partnership within a newsroom are great to see on-screen, and I hope this is just the beginning of those two being together in a project. And Rob Morgan continues to make one of the unsung heroes of film 2018 is shed tears in theaters.

While the story message and plot of the photograph may be super simplistic, part of its charm. The leaps between past and present can sometimes be daunting, particularly when Christina’s relationships with her mother and Issac lack meaning and growth. But the oozing chemistry between the cast brings the overall story together. The film does comedy as well as drama, though the film seemed like it would play its more dramatic moments in the beginning. But the love story mashed up with many elements of family drama makes the film more than just a normal romance. The shot is on Valentine’s Day weekend at theatres.
