But you really only have so much time to do this and you don’t want to get fooled into watching a boring film. What movies are worth watching, then? We’ve already broken down this year’s best and worst Best Picture winners. But now we’re shortening the long list of nominees to the big players and movies that will actually stick with you. So which ones appreciated your time? Below are the ten movies you probably should see if you haven’t already seen.

1. Creed

2/2.142 2/2.142 Source: Warner Bros. This film is not the usual Oscar bait that makes it quite impressive that it has been nominated for. The film is taking place in post-apocalyptic Australia where women inmates take a stand against a dictator. The movie is beautiful the action draws you in and it is unusual for female characters in this type of movie to get an interesting arch. The film is up for 10 Oscars including Best Cinematography and Directing.

3. Space 2/2.143 2/2.143 Source: A24 Films The film tells the story of a young mother and her five-year-old son trapped by a man in a space, and attempts to escape. It’s a touching story that makes you look through an innocent child’s eyes at this disastrous situation. It is a tearjerker and Jacob Tremblay is doing a great job. It’s up for Best Picture Brie Larson in a Leading Role Directing and Writing nominated for Best Actress.

4. Spotlight 2/2.144 2/2.144 Source: Open Road Films Finally comes to the big screen the true story of how the Boston Globe exposed the huge Catholic Church cover-up of child molestation scandals. Not only does it demonstrate the reporters struggle with their own faith to write the story. But the film talks about how something like this has been so long concealed. The film is up for six Oscars including much-deserved acting nominations for Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo. 5.

The Revenant 2/2.145 2/2.145 Source: New Regency Pictures This will finally be the yearTom Hardy for Supporting Actor from Leonardo who gave an awesome performance opposite the leading man.

6. The Big Short 2/2.146 2/2.146 Source: Paramount Pictures Four men are forecasting the fall of the housing bubble and using their expertise to take down the banks which caused it. The true story may not seem so compelling as compared to the nominated action and drama films. Yet the film seeks to break it down for the average person, for those who have no idea what happened to cause this horrific financial situation. It is also nominated for five Oscars, including the nomination of Christian Bale as Supporting Actor.

The Danish Midwife2/2.148 2/2.148 Source: Pixar The Pixar film shows a young child who has to run when coping with her feelings of Joy Anxiety Anger Disgust and Sadness who plays real characters in the heart-warming and hilarious animation film. It is nominated for an Oscar Writing and Best Animated feature film. Because of the emotional story it is one of the most talked about films of the year. It may not have snagged as many awards as other films, but in discussions with the pop culture it will most likely stick around longer than the other nominees. 9.

Star Wars: Force Awakens 2/2.149 2/2.149 Source: Lucasfilm Chances are you’ve seen this nominee already since almost everybody in the U.S. has several times. We can’t rule it out of the list though. The new space opera sequel sees Rey and Finn enter the battle against the First Order along with the Rebels. If you have seen the originals then because of the reverence it gives to the first trilogy you will love this new installment. This also brings back all the favorite characters which are so dear to the fandom. For its technical work, the film received five nominations. 10.

Straight Outta Compton 2/2.150 2/2.150 Source: Iconic Pictures Here’s another film that has been put into the Academy’s criticism of its lack of diversity. The film tells the Compton hip-hop group N.W.A.’s true story and its struggles with the music industry as well as police brutality. The music should carry you back to the days of Jason Mitchell’s heyday acting in the group is great and the story is unfortunately still relevant today. The film is nominated for just one award that is Writing (Original Screenplay) and shockingly the cast was not even invited to the ceremony at all.
