A Japanese Isp Sued After Blocking Pirate Websites For Breaching User PrivacyAn Internet service provider is sued by a Japanese lawyer for violating the privacy of its customers. The Japanese government is demanding the voluntary blocking of pirated websites by Isp firms. The subject remains controversial though the law is clear. Yuichi Nakazawa, a Tokyo lawyer, has decided to sue his Internet service provider (Isp) for invading his privacy and potentially breaching the contract after being blocked from accessing a specific website notorious for its pirated content. Nakazawa argues that in order for the company named Ntt, which stands for “Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.” to prevent him from accessing any website they first had to violate his privacy to see what he was doing online that was contrary to Japanese legislation. Interestingly enough, the Japanese government agreed on April 13 to do something about the pirated content in that country and to introduce steps that would prohibit users from accessing websites notorious for hosting pirated anime manga and related content. However, at the moment there is no legislation that allows this change, so the government has asked Isp companies like Ntt to voluntarily stop users from accessing such websites. Ntt announced publicly on Monday that they will introduce these emergency short-term measures. Those three websites have so far been blocked by this company: AniTube Mangamura and MioMio. Figure 1 Image Courtesy Of: Brandnew-s If we remember that there is currently no law that gives Isp companies the right to block their users from accessing other websites and that the “Telecommunications Business Act” in that country guarantees the privacy of communications and also forbids any form of censorship in accordance with the Constitution, the Ntt may be in a major legal issue. Further along Nakazawa it is reported that the corporation had infringed the contract with him after they had violated his privacy so that further penalties could also be involved. Torrent Freak said the Ntt has refused to comment on the case according to the local press but the organization has no intention of removing the steps introduced.
