This is it! How to Play It Safe and Encrypt Email

BySydney Butler-June 26, 2018 949 Email is one of the oldest web technologies and was invented by Ray Tomlinson back in 1972. At least Tomlinson is responsible for the more common characteristics of some of the emails. It is not accurate to say that email is a technology of the Internet as such. It predates Arpanet, after all. The Internet itself is the primordial one. Just what it says on the box is at its heart email: a wireless means of sending text messages to one another. Though email technology has evolved drastically over the decades we still use today’s same basic technology. The end result is that regular emails are sent out in plain text format. It ensures that the email data can be read by anyone just watching the network packets. Not good. Not good.

Trust No One

Despite its weak privacy email is still important for anyone who uses the site. So what can be done to ensure your messages are kept safe from eyes that don’t see them? That is exactly what we are going to show you in this post. The technology is known as encryption, so you can easily protect your email with it. E-mail encryption is more generally asymmetric. In this case there is a public key that can be used by anyone to encrypt the message but it can be unscrambled by only those with the private key. This is the most common method these days but we will shortly be going into the technical details.

Use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to decode all data that passes through your internet connection using encryption technology. This means nobody looking in from outside can make any sense of the network packets passing through various nodes on the site.

Email Encryption Types: S / Mime Pgp / Mime

There are two commonly used email encryption standards: S / Mime and Pgp / Mime, respectively. For Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions the “Mime” bit is short. It is the format in which nearly all of modern emails are sent. This is the system where you can add files and photos to your inbox. Thanks to Mime, rich formatting and special characters are possible too. Pgp / Mime essentially does the same thing but it decentralizes the certificate system. You don’t get a central authority with the private and public keys. Instead you use the Pgp script to create them. S / Mime is relatively simple to set up on email clients like Outlook. If you are using web-based mail such as Gmail it is safer to use a Pgp-based solution. Protection is very good on either occasion.

An Important Note on S / Mime Pgp and Efail Vulnerability

The precise details of how Efail functions are rather complex. The short version is that it uses external email content (such as Javascript, and server-pulled images) to trick the target into giving the attacker a plain decrypted document. The attacker intercepts and then modifies the encrypted email (which they can’t read). The email is then sent to the goal which has the key to decrypt. The decrypted text will then be forwarded back to the attacker using the exploit described above. Since there are no good alternatives to the two main email encryption technologies, and the actual encryption remains intact, there are some improvements that you need to make to stay safe: Disable automatic decryption in the email client. Delete your Client’s keys. Decrypt in a separate application, manually. Disable Html rendering of emails at least until you know your client has fixed the problem. That should keep things secure for now, but both S / Mime and Pgp should hopefully receive updates that make such exploits impossible. Be extra cautious in using any technology until then. Here is a list below of all the email encryptions. Mac iOs Gmail with Google

Critical to Firefox Workaround

Comodo still offers a free certificate but it was a bit of a hassle getting their issuing to work. Neither Chrome nor Edge will work any more with their system of issuing certificates. All I had to do was fill in the form in Firefox and it worked fine! Thanks to some kind of bug in the latest version of Outlook, you will need to convert the certificate file using Firefox: go to Options Select Privacy and Security Click Certificates to open the certificate manager Select Import In the certificate manager select backup Save the certificate as a.p12 file and set a password. Hold your password in mind! We will later import the translated certificate into Outlook.

Configuration Outlook Now that we’ve got the certificate it’s time to set it up in Outlook. I use the old version of Office 365 but the older versions work in a very similar way. Phase 1: File&gtOptions press. You should have a look at this window. 951 Phase 2: Click Protection at Trust Center&gtEmail. You should see this: Step 3: Click on Import / Export now. This dialog box will open: 953 Click Navigate to the Firefox saved certificate to enter the password that you used to build it and click Ok. Phase 4: Return to Trust Center & gt Email Security and Press Settings under Encrypted Email This example will look like:

Setting Up Email Encryption on Mac

If you’re not a big fan of Windows and you’ve chosen to join Apple Church then you’ll have to follow a different path to get your mail client to submit encrypted messages. That being said on Mac-Os this is easier than on Windows. The built-in email client has native S / Mime support so it’s pretty much smooth sailing. Having a certificate

You need to get a certificate from a certificate authority first as with Outlook. As always, you can get it from whomever you want but since it is compatible and free we will use Comodo again. Phase 1: On the free secure email certificate page, just click “Sign Up Now” on the tab. 955 956 Step 3: If everything goes well, you will receive a message of progress. 957 Stage 4: Now test the certificate connection in your inbox. Tap on the Certificate to print it. 958 959 Step 6: Upload the Certificate to your device. If you’re using Chrome instead of using Safari, it won’t work properly 960 Step 7: Go to the location of the download and run the script. To support you, a wizard named “connect certificates” will pop up. 961 962

Configuring the Apple Client

Step 8: Open the Mail (Apple email client) now that you are approved. If it was available restart it already. Now, you will see the little padlock icon is blue and closed when you send a mail to that guy. If you want to disable encryption just click to open the little padlock. That is it! In the future your emails will be encrypted to that recipient. Only remember the first time you exchange certificates with someone.

Email Encryption for iOs Devices

Not that many people use Macs in the larger scheme of things. Windows is still the most powerful out there operating system, by far. However things aren’t quite so twisted when it comes to phones and tablets. Although Apple controls a significant portion of the mobile market although Android has the most users. On top of that, the average person nowadays is more likely to send emails from a smartphone than a Laptop. So having some sort of email encryption configured on your iPhone or iPad is extra important. Phase 1: Go to settings for iOs, and then to accounts and passwords. 967 Step 2: Choose the correct e-mail account. On the next page, tap the account again then press Advanced Settings. Phase 3 968: Turn S / Mime on now. Be sure to set Encrypt to Yes by default. Step 4: All you need to do is pull the certificate info from a global server list from your iOs device. Next to receiver names like this you will see a little padlock: 970 Just tap it so it closes and the email will be encrypted. If the padlock is red it means no certificate has been identified. All that person needs to do is give you an email adding their certificate. You will need to tell iOs you trust the certificate after they have done this. With the certificate attachment, you can do this in the actual email: Tap their address in the file. Then press Download. Choosing completed. Now that person should also have the Blue Padlock. By the way, you can also turn that on under advanced settings if you want to add your own certificate to a post.

Android device encryption Android phones are the world’s most popular mobile devices and nothing beats sending and receiving emails on the go which is why most people do it. The good news is that you can easily use encryption technology to protect the emails sent from your Android device. The bad news is there aren’t many mail client applications that have native S / Mime support unlike iOs. That’s a little bit of a pain but we can work around that. As is the usual case with Android, when determining how to encrypt your mail you have a few choices available. First of all you can choose whether you want to use S / Mime or Pgp / Mime. Personally since we’ve already had the trouble to get a certificate I’d go with S / Mime.

Email Ciphermail Encryption Don’t know how to do any of those things? Thankfully Ciphermail has developed a Quick Start Guide for Ciphermail which will get you to roll in no time! Also the app itself has a fantastic wizard to direct you through everything in minutes.

Gmail Encryption

Gmail is one of the world’s most popular Web-based email applications. This service was founded by search giant Google, and already reached the 1 billion user mark in 2016. That is awesome right? There’s a catch to this however and it’s a pretty big one. It works only if the person to whom you send the message also uses a provider that runs Tls. In practice this means you don’t have to do something special if you are sending something to another Gmail user. Your email is now securely encrypted. If the email address is not an address provided by Gmail then all bets are off. The simplest solution to this is to ask the receiver to provide a Gmail address for you. Since Gmail is open, this is not such a high order. But sometimes for some reason it’s simply not possible. That’s when using an encryption plugin for Gmail. Using an Encryption Plugin for Gmail You can access email encryption software from the Chrome Web Store, if you’re using Chrome. They insert themselves neatly into the Gmail app and allow you to easily write encrypted messages. All you need to do is provide a password and will decrypt the message if the recipient enters it. That of course raises the question of how to get the recipient password. You just can’t encrypt it! All good solutions are to give them a call asking them in person (for future reference) or to use an encrypted chat app. I propose starting point for FlowCrypt. The program was patched almost as soon as the Efail announcement was made although it uses Pgp. Instructions for Installing FlowCrypt

Here is how to use FlowCrypt in Chrome. Phase 1: Chrome opens. Tap “Download” at the top left of the browser window. 972 973 Flow Crypt. “So it should feel. 974 Stage 5: Chrome press “d.” “The extension will be built this way. 975 976 Step 7: Click on the FlowCrypt icon at the top right hand corner of the screen. 977 Step 8: Click on ‘ Gmail Start ‘ 978982 Step 13: If the receiver does not have encryption, simply click on “Add one-time password” in the compose email window and pick one. The person on the other end of the message can use their password to open. 983

Keep It Secret Keep It Safe Yes when Gandalf the Grey spoke those words in the Lord of the Rings but he did not refer to your emails. But still, the advice is just as important. Despite strong encryption not every email you send must be safe. The real test is when you imagine what would happen if some stranger were able to read the text. If the answer is “lots of bad stuff” then presumably you should encrypt it. It’s not hard to set up good email encryption as we have seen above. Once you’ve sorted your customer and certificates it’s about the same as sending a standard difficulty text. Although there are alternatives to email such as Signal the fact is that for years to come we will be using this ancient form of electronic mail. Email is indeed much more likely to evolve than to vanish. So if you want to use it safely!
