145 Google Play Store Apps Infected with Malicious Microsoft Windows Executable FilesByNitish Singh-July 30 2018.424 Figure 1 Photo Courtesy of Android Updater Infected Apk files on the Play Store posed no threat to Android users but running them on Windows systems could lead to malware infections. These infections are known to be dangerous to software supply chains because Google doesn’t easily detect them. Next time you download an app with a high rating and a large number of downloads from the Google Play Store, it might not be as safe as you think. Palo Alto Networks, a security research firm, performed a scanned cryptocurrency mining apps in a bid to protect the network. The results are close to an earlier 2017 Palo Alto test that returned 132 contaminated devices to Google’s online store. .425 Figure 2 Image Courtesy of Palo Alto.426 Figure 3 Image Courtesy of Palo Alto This kind of malware design can be harmful to the app supply chain as it has proved to be an effective tactic to hack mobile development platforms such as Android or iOs. More than half a year has passed with the release dates of the recently identified applications dating back to October 2017, with the apps available on the Google Play Store. The security firm has disclosed that developers often have a mix of infected and non-infected apps that suggest that developers often use different platforms for their software. Despite Google losing control over the production tools that are used to manufacture Android apps for the Play Store, the tech giant’s security countermeasures will prove futile. Developers and technology networks are responsible for securing their applications, which is hardly the case according to recent research by Palo Alto. handle. ByBill Toulas-December 22, 2018.439 Qualcomm wins yet another court battle in Germany after innovative legal tactics were used. Apple will appeal the decision citing possibly biased judgment based on insufficient facts. All Apple iPhone modelsdid with the China injunction has been barred by the Munich Regional Court. What is interesting to note is that the Munich court ruling was based on the violation of a patent which was ruled non-infringing by their Us counterparts. More specifically, an Itc (International Trade Commission) judge decided not to ban Apple products in the Us after analyzing the Qorvo chip schematics and deducting that there was no violation of the unique patent. With this in mind, Qualcomm set out a different plan for their Munich case not to reveal to the German court the schematics of the chip in question, as their European lawyers would not sign a non-disclosure agreement for the chip design. This was a legal trick as the decision to allow this proof to be presented or did not pressure the court which, in effect, refused to allow it. Apple will challenge the ban for now so that the decision will not have immediate effect until the court considers the appeal. Meanwhile the two companies are continuing their vigorous legal battle against other courts in Germany (and around the world) with Qualcomm’s arguments centered on other patents related to the software used in iOs and Apple requiring targeted changes to German iPhones that delete the infringements.
