Secrets to a Salon

The number one thing I hear from almost all my clients is Can’t you just come to my house and do my hair like that? Believe me if I could, but there’s so much more of you than I do! After reading this article, I hope that with these proper tools and tips you will feel confident enough to style your hair on your own. You’ve got it!

Starting with the South

You’ve heard about it a million times, but here comes another salon shampoo bought from the drugstore. Here’s the skinny store-bought products are OK when you’re in a pinch, but just like your skin, healthy skin begins with a quality face wash and healthy hair begins with a quality shampoo. Shampoo / conditioner should always have low amounts of water and high concentrations of quality ingredients such as panthenol (vitamin b5) and citric acid that are usually lacking in drugstore brands. Pretty polished hair starts out from the inside, so the Pantene’s ditch and try something new. My current favorites are NOU NOU by Davines an Italian line that is responsible for all ingredients and is available for purchase through Amazon as well as Normal Persons by evo an Australian line that performs as it says it will and always serves laughs.

Tame & Treat

Most of us have encountered the ever-angry hair segment that hangs down our back and ends up at the end of the day in a great mess of dreadlock-like tangles. So, when it’s time to brush out of the shower anyway, those tangles turn into a tear worthy mess. It’s a MUST to use a decent leave-in conditioner before you wash your hair. My absolute favorite is Unite Seconds Leave-in (and I’ve tried them all). It breaks down the balance between moisture / proteins and acts as a UV and heat-protective; it’s all in one. It’s what you need.

Brusha Brusha Brusha

Unlike common opinion, it is good for you to clean your teeth! It’s important because it not only deflects your tresses but also stimulates hair follicles on your scalp to foster blood flow and new hair growth; think of it as scalp exfoliation. I use the Wet Brush on the hair of my customers starting at the ends and working through the tangles. This brush is nice because its bristles bend more flexibly than traditional paddle brushes when tangles are too tight instead of rattling through them and causing breakage. Now for the round brushing good stuff. The secret of a shiny, sleek blowout. Practice with a large fat round brush to get your motor skills in order before you reach a small round brush to get you tangled and flustered. The Olivia Garden is a good starting brush. Inch ceramic ion option this will result in a smooth frizz-free> Ibiza B5. It brush is the best for coarse frizzy / fine textures as it has nylon bristles that will not overheat / damage hair while using. It also has a lightweight cork handle for fast tangle-free styling.

Blow Dry

With your hair brushed tangle-free and prepared with seconds as your heat-protective start to blow-dry your hair just with your fingertips wrapping your hair around your head as you blow-dry. Make sure that you use an airflow concentration or nozzle to channel the air down each hair segment. If you don’t have a nozzle on your blow-dryer, the cuticula of your hair will be whipped in any direction, resulting in frost and loss of shine. Once the percentage of your hair is dry, start working with the round comb. Guide the air at the base of your roots to give a little oomph / volume and then spread each section smoothly over your brush all the way to the ends. For now, the round brush is too much? Instead of using a paddle brush to get a sleek finish. BabylissPRO Nano Titanium and Ionic Anti-Static by Hot Tools are a few of my go – to portable blow-dryers. My favorite is Babyliss Pro Ceramic / inch curling iron for the best seamless curl pattern. Now that your hair is smooth and dry, clip half your hair in the first place to tackle the bottom section. Starting around your face and taking about -inch vertical panels (sections) curl your hair off your face, leaving the bottom inch or so out of the iron to look undone. Continue to curl away from the face all the way to the middle back of your head around your head. Then drop down the top layer of hair and repeat alternating curl direction to give a more textured appearance. If you need a video, you can see my Beach Waves tutorial here! At the highest temperature, you don’t need to use hot tools; a medium heat will result in the same style / wear time as high heat. Let’s not heat up our hair if we don’t have to!
